A recent study sheds light on why prolonged mental fatigue might make us more prone to snap decisions and even aggressive behavior. The research suggests that extended periods of cognitive effort, especially tasks requiring self-control, can drain our mental resources, leading us to make less cooperative choices. 

When our brain is “tired,” areas responsible for decision-making show signs of sleep-like activity, which impacts our ability to think clearly. In fact, participants in the study who faced fatigue-inducing tasks were twice as likely to choose hostile actions over cooperation in economic games. 

Takeaway? This research backs up the old advice to “sleep on it” before making decisions. When we give our minds time to recharge, we’re less likely to make choices we might regret.
